7-Zip is a free program for data compression for Microsoft Windows or Linux (using Wine tool if you want to have the same GUI). You can use a graphical user interface or a command line. 
By default the program uses the new 7z file format, also free (with extension .7 z). This format uses LZMA compression methods and PPMD (More suitable for texts), developed by its author, and can apply a filter to the executable to increase its compressibility. 7z files can be solid, unlike the zip, which improves the compression set of small files.
